food, music and exercise – by Mum (Jenkins)

“You must write on our blog page all about your visit” they said, so I am now back home in Bedford without any Icelandic ash causing disruption to my flight plans nor thankfully to my plane and I am trying to stay awake until at least 9.00pm so as to avoid the jetlag.
Remembering then, is my way of staying awake…………

By the time I landed in Austin I had already acclimatised to a certain extent having spent a week in California…okay so being in California bears little resemblance to Texas, it’s true but Taco Bell and Walmart are everywhere and in all States they drive on the wrong side of the road!
In fact in Austin the sound of the language is not dissimilar either as it is a truly Cosmopolitan city with less of the southern drawl than one might expect.

You have to attend a Willie Nelson concert in the middle of a field in an out of the way place to hear the real thang honey. Yee haa!
You can actually stand and, I believe the expression is holla and trust me, if you don’t shout out long and loud they think you’re kinda weird not to be excited by the great man himself…even though he did forget a couple of lines and…..well no, I wont even go there.
The whole evening was terrific. It was simply an experience I will never forget and my ears are still in recovery from being down wind of Matthews piercing whistles.
What we didn’t get to hear ….about the young man next to us’s Granadaddy and Gramma probably ain’t worth a dime. He was so loud and SO SOUTHERN. I’ll let you all put your own drawl onto those lines but I guarantee it probably wont be anywhere like the real thing and I bet you wont be wearing a WHITE ten gallon cowboy hat at the time! He was also very, very drunk by the end of the evening so all accents hugely exaggerated.
Thank you Matt and Katie for simply the BEST night out…

Well the best night that is, unless you take into account that we also went to the seaside on the previous weekend…

food, music and exercise – by Mum contd

Continued from here

…we also went to the seaside on the previous weekend…

Not at all “kiss me quick” hats and Brighton rock…but a wonderful little apartment (one of Home Away’s finest!) right down on the beach at Port Aransas on the Gulf of Mexico coast and no, it wasn’t a freebie!.
Sun, sea and relaxation. We British know how to do the Gulf of Mexico with our own little nuances…that cup of tea in a flask that Katie carried all the way down to the beach tasted devine following on from the cheese and Branston Pickle sandwhiches!

Port Aransas Beach

Matthew and Katie exerted themselves playing (and losing) their Frisbee and then wiled away the time flying the kite whilst I got sunburned doing absolutely nothing!
That evening we ate in a recommended restaurant and celebrated Matthew’s ’30 and 3 weeks’ birthday which was simply fabulous…in fact we ate out and about at so many different places during my stay and each one seemed to be a different theme. I feel as if I have eaten around the globe in the last 3 weeks….so much so that I too, now resemble a globe and the diet starts NOW!!. There’s a down side to everything I guess.
Of all the things that occurred during that weekend though the pelican has got to be an unexpected bonus….just as Matt said “I wish he would move, do something or take off so I could get a good shot” the bird lifted off from the very high post and flew towards Matt and his hastily lined up camera and divebombed me but Matt got the shot.
In fact we both got plenty of pictures and the pelican landed on the pier and waited for the fisherman to hand feed him some catch! A memorable day.

I’ve said all of the above without mentioning music! Well apart from Willie and the crazy rednecks. Can I say that in a blog? They are such HUGE fans.

So imagine if you will a whole selection of blues, jazz, pop, folk, country and western……. the list is endless and it’s all available most of the time. On my last night, Katie and Matt took me to the same Jazz club Kez and Dai visited and yes Kez, I did write on a dollar and it is now pinned to a post next to the bar. I saw the two supplied by Kez and Dai, so whoever goes next has to find them so you could be there for a while!
We had a Mexican Sunday brunch listening to Spanish guitars and you can find whatever you are looking for and more in Sixth street including apparently, half naked women dancing in windows and the bucking bronco challenge also available for all to view through the window of a bar.
I imagine it is a bit of a challenge after several pints of beer too. I didnt volunteer…either to try and stay on it or even to drink several pints of beer!

BUT
………. (and yes I do know a proper sentence can never start with the word ‘but’) one of the most magical scenes was simply arriving home one Tuesday evening after a lovely supper to find Matt and Katie’s neighbours (3 young lads) making up a musical trio consisting of double bass, banjo and guitar doing their own off the cuff session on the front porch of the condo and singing along.
It’s a Tuesday for crying out loud, it was 10.30 at night and there is this wonderful sound drifting along the street with the warmth of the evening and ….it just fine, chilled and dandy and nobody thinks to complain.
I loved it!!!

I cannot write an Austin blog without mentioning the river. It is the Colorado river which runs through the City and at one point it flows through Zilker park which is so much more than an expanse of greenery. By that I mean there is a cafe, a swimming pool built within the river….. no azure blue plastic linings here….you can fly kites, visit the botanical gardens, (Katie and I did and they are wonderful, well worth a visit and they even exhibit a dinosaur) you can play frisbee golf ….yep there are baskets hung in the trees to aim for and a complete course to follow…. a kid’s playground of course, with a wall of musical xylophone type things….and then there are the boats!
We took out a canoe for three hours and spent a magical afternoon paddling (okay, Katie and Matt did most of the work and I did most of the exclaiming and the photo taking) with another Katie style picnic and more tea!!  The river is such a relaxing place to be if only because the residents use it all the time for their dog runs, jogging, cycling and walking. Young mums and dads run whilst pushing 3 wheeler buggies with babies on board as part of their training and I was privileged enough to spot a local man who is renowned for his transvestite tendencies……pedaling passed me, across the bridge, simply wearing a diamante thong.
Matt tells me he has never seen him but his name is Leslie!  (edit Matt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_Cochran)

We attended The Salt Lick – an out of town BBQ…………..Imagine wooden benches, a huge indoor fire with a couple of cows on it (Sorry Kez don’t look at the pics of this one!) all inside a huge a shack with a live musician…actually by Austin standards I am not sure if he was alive…….. let alone playing live as he was hardly audible but I imagine the atmosphere on some nights would be…it’s got to be said somewhere…awesome.
Katie uses this phrase a lot ….about lots of things but then again she’s almost a local by now.
Matthew obviously is as he made a faux pas at work the other day referring to himself and his team as ‘us Texans’ or some such thing!

I also cannot complete this without mentioning the “two steppin’” evening we went on with some friends of K&M. Many thanks to Chuck who bravely took me and Katie, for a twirl around the floor…..one at a time of course without either of us having the vaguest idea what we were supposed to be doing.
You were right Katie, we should have gone earlier in the evening for the lessons!! I assume you will be fully trained up by the time I return?! But the experience was wonderful….so many folk of so many different ages and all of them simply having the best time and loving to dance.

To be honest Austin is a lively, young, entertaining and very beautiful city so it would be hard to know why any young people wouldn’t fall in love with it and want to be part of it. It seems to me that Katie and Matt are under it’s spell and I for one don’t blame them. I doubt they will ever really feel away from home because once you’ve been out and visited them you will want to return.
If I have blabbed on for far too long maybe I should have said “An experience of food, music and exercise….it’s all there and all awesome!”……………. but you see it is SO much more than that!

Matt’s Birthday Weekends (by Matt)

The last few weeks have been eventful to say the least.   I have jumped 10500ft, been thrown a surprise party, ridden a rollercoaster in the dark, plummeted from a mechanical rocket, skydived indoors, seen the Kennedy Space Center and witnessed a NASA space shuttle launch.

Phew, what a ride.

The skydiving was amazing, we got one ticket as a wedding present, so my birthday seemed a good time to make the most of it.   75 degrees without a cloud in the sky, and it was all good fun until I got thrown out of a plane strapped to nothing but a short man named Jason.  Its one of the craziest things I’ve ever done and an experience I would recommend to anyone.

We went home and got ready to head out for a couple of beers.  But Katie took ages and was annoyingly late.  By the time we finally left I was pretty pissed off about it – until we arrived at the bar and everyone was there!  I had a brilliant night, thanks to everyone that made it.

Then on Friday we flew to Orlando, Florida for the weekend.  We started with Universal Studios, a daunting but fun park.  The simpsons and the mummy ride are both highly recommended.

The night after, we were picked up by annoying woman who wouldn’t let me eat on her bus.

We drove to Kennedy Space Center – which is fun, but much better in the middle of the night. Rocket Garden is a particularly impressive place, with all the old rockets on display and lit up to look amazing.

On our way to the causeway, we saw the shuttle for the first time.   Six miles is not as far as it sounds.  After a bit of a ruck to get chairs, KT and I sat and waited – we hadn’t slept for 24 hours, but the anticipation kept tiredness at bay.  Especially when they announced that the launch was NO GO at T minus 20 minutes!

The launch was astonishing – the cloud of smoke engulfed the whole area as the sky lit up blindingly bright and the rocket emerged like a hundred foot firework.  30 seconds later the sound caught up to us and shook our chests like a bass drum.  An incredible sight, that I will never forget.

Within 15 minutes of collapsing onto the coach I think every one was asleep.  What a day.

For the last night in Florida we found an indoor skydiving center – just to finish off the crazy weekend.  Those guys are pretty insane, especially when they grab you and spin you like a top 30 feet from the ground.

What a fantastic couple of birthday weekends!

Happy, happy hour in Austin, Texas (by Kerrie)

There is something deeply satisfying about surprising your brother to the point that he can’t talk but something slightly suspicious when the first thing he can think to say is “how long are you staying??”

Our trip to Austin started with a visit to surprise Matt in the Shady Grove, a local eatery which offers a daily happy hour (actually spanning 3 very happy hours) and serves the biggest portions of ice cream pie I have ever seen.  Think house brick!

This was my first ever visit to the States and Texas made for a great introduction. Katie had provided us with some useful advice before we got there:

  • There are no cowboy hats or cowboy boots in Texas; just hats and boots
  • Sarcasm doesn’t exist and any use of it will result in bemused silence or you feeling the need to apologise for causing offense (useful to know when you’re travelling with Dai!)

Should you be planning to visit the Jenkins-Texan massive (and I highly recommend it) these observations will stand you in good stead. From our own experiences I would add the following:

  • Don’t attempt to be vaguely friendly with anyone in any position of airport security, all attempts are futile and will be met with suspicion. Expect to be asked slightly ludicrous questions (“why are you here?” ‘on holiday’ why here?” ‘We’re visiting Kerrie’s brother’ “but why here, why now??” ‘I don’t know damnit!!’)
  • · Definitely make plans to explore Texas, we would recommend Bandera which is proper cowboy country – but remember: the locals aren’t actually in fancy dress, they are genuinely cowboys! And not the dodgy builder kind.
  • Try not to laugh when a cowboy patiently explains that Stetson hats are made with beaver and are graded in Xs denoting the amount of beaver in the hat – the more beaver the better   ….laughing is just immature….
  • If you’re visiting between December and February (when the weather is varied…and we mean varied: sunburn one day, snow another!) then it’s worth driving to see a bald eagle’s nest and chicks, it’s really something.
  • Note that happy hour in Austin is between 16.00 - 19.00 everywhere! And they know how to do happy, happy drinks! Katie and I can particularly recommend the long Mexican Margaritas served in the Iron Cactus….$5 for a cocktail shaker full. That’s 3 drinks for 5 bucks. So cheap it’s almost freeeee!! Also note that multiple margaritas do not make a stable foundation for a night out….
  • You have to play a game of Shuffle Board. I could make the effort to describe the game but suspect that any attempt would make it sound like a bar version of boules – and it’s really much more exciting than that! I particularly enjoyed it because the girls beat the boys on a number of occasions………ha!
  • Go to watch a basketball game or ice hockey match – even if you’re not a sports fan. It’s a crazy experience and the level of patriotism and commitment to the team, state and country is almost infectious (we stood bewildered and uncomfortable for the national anthem but 20 minutes in to the game we were “horns up” in full support of the Longhorns). If you’re really not into the sport, go simply to marvel at the cheerleaders – they’re insane!
  • Finally, if Matt has the time to spare – ask him for the tour of his office…..I’m in love with the revolving snow globes and have decided to steal that feature for incorporation in my next house! Having seen the offices, I bet you, he never gets any work done….
  • We really did have a fantastic time and Austin is a great place. We’ll be going back when it’s sunny (and we’ve shed all the additional weight gained). Thanks so much to Katie and Matt for putting us up, showing us round and being brilliant hosts.

Austin 2010.   That just happened!

A 5,000 mile surprise! Sw-eeeeet!

I’m happy to say we successfully sprang the best surprise ever on Matt last week when Kerrie and Dai walked into a restaurant  in Austin and sat at the booth next to us. Matt nearly passed out and turned slightly green!

Kes - the 5,000 mile surprise!

We’ve had a fantastic week!  Expect a guest blogger’s account of Austin soon…   xxx

Matt is a Super Bowl star.

Last weekend was Super Bowl Sunday (lots of beer, chicken wings, massive quarterbacks and ADVERTS.)  Yup it’s all about the adverts apparently, the football is secondary.  Especially when Matt’s company (homeaway.com) has invested A LOT of money in running a 30 second advert and, because of the expected increase in traffic to the site, I haven’t seen my husband for about 6 weeks.

All the hard work was worth it last week when homeaway.com maintained 100% availability,  saw a 35x spike in traffic AND was voted no.2 Super Bowl advert overall.

Meanwhile, I had a great afternoon at my first Super Bowl party, although only saw about 2 minutes of football.

Well done Matt.

PS Does anyone back home know who the Griswolds are?

The sun does shine in Texas afterall.

Until today I was beginning to think that the awesome weather we had been promised in Texas was a big fat myth.

Don’t get me wrong, i’m happy Austin is coming out of it’s two year drought.  However, I was even happier when today, after weeks of London-style drizzle, the sky turned blue and the sun shone.  Breakfast on our porch in the sun was awesome.

Roll on Springtime.

“Just hit him with the stick dude”

Last week we went to our first ice hockey game. Gooooooo Rampage.  They fight.  I mean actually fight.  Throwing punches and hitting each other with sticks.  And the crowd go crazy, slamming themselves against the edge of the pitch like they’re watching a dog fight. (Apparently that’s what people do at dog fights.)

And the rules are strange.  They can use their stick for hitting anything (the puc, each other,  the refs, but not the cheer leaders.)  But strangely they can also use anything to hit the puc (stick, feet, hands, cheerleaders, foreheads…)

A confusing yet exhilarating experience.  Especially when Matt caught a stuffed cow on a parachute which fell from the sky, apparently meaning he’d won a free chicken burger.  I told you, confusing eh?

We finally found it.

Having moved all the way to Texas we’ve not really seen what you would stereotypically call, erm, Texas.  Austin is essentially a very cool little city with little sign of  baron landscape, cactus/i and cowboys.

Last week we had our first glimpse of what ‘Texas’ is to many.  Enchantment Rock is simply beautiful.  We also saw a real life cowboy (just one), some prancing deer, many cacti, lots and lots of general baroness.  Oh and we nearly ran over a cow.  A BIG Texan sized one.  Actually it nearly ran over us.

Boneless turkey for two.

Christmas was a relatively quiet affair with me and Matt eating till we hurt (nothing new there), consuming lots of fine wine and spending a disproportionate amount of time sofa-bound.  It was bliss, and definitely a Christmas of firsts;

1st one as a married couple and living in the States

But 1st time we’ve had no family about (boo), crackers or mince pies (sob)

1st time we’d cooked Christmas dinner ourselves (the concept of ‘pigs in blankets’ doesn’t exit over here – that hurts)

1st time i’ve made a trifle (mmm, next time even more sherry)

1st time the sun shone through blue skies all day!

Hope you all had a great one too. xx

Matt can barely contain his excitement...
